Federico Viticci’s response to John Gruber’s response to Matt Birchler’s look at Android’s current array of app designs is making the rounds today. You’ve likely read it already. Many folks seem to be coming to the same conclusion: The Mac is a powerhouse computer and doesn’t get in the way of what you’re trying to do, while the iPad is that unicorn computer with brimming potential that falls flat on its face year after year. Put me in the same boat. My 11-inch M1 iPad Pro is by and large my kids’ first computer after being relegated to the sidelines. I’m tired of waiting.

I almost feel gross sharing a Twitter thread right now, but nonetheless, this is a great thread with some interesting setups. Apple’s displays just hit different.

Whoever designed this office has impeccable taste.

I’ve used the 14-inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro now since its debut and the only thing I wish I had more of is screen real estate. I love the 32GB of RAM. I love the I/O. I love everything about the computer. I don’t need its portability though, so next time I figured I’d be going with as close to baseline as possible 16-inch MacBook Pro. But with today’s rumour mill from Mark Gurman, I might have to wait to see what this 15-inch MacBook Air holds in store for us.

Say what you will about this laptop’s funky design, I think it has a lot going for it. A), I think many folks get 75% more work done with two displays, and B), the ability to use it as an actual book is super intriguing. Maybe it’ll fall flat, but colour me intrigued.

This has to be one of the worst bits of taxation reporting I’ve ever read. If you are a Canadian (and likely American, or English, or French, or really a citizen of Planet Earth that files a tax return) and you contribute to a pension, or pay for childcare expenses, or pay mortgage interest (in America, specifically, I think), then you also have deducted expenses to reduce your tax owing. Deductions aren’t loopholes.

I’ve seen a variety of spots recently where folks consider cash outflows as “expenses” or “expenditures”, rather than the more accurate categorization of “capital” and “current”. This misunderstanding has led me to the question: If this is how folks interpret financial definitions, how bad were the/are the misunderstandings regarding the COVID-19 pandemic? Capital and current are pretty simple concepts. Now throw in complicated medical terms and there is major cause for concern.

Looks like I’ve found the next notebook system I’ll buy and ultimately not use. What a beautiful piece of analog stationery.
