If, like me, you love the 50mm focal length, there is no shortage of choice in Sony’s FE system. Grab a 50mm f/1.8 for $300, the highly-rated 55mm Sonnar for about $900, or this new 50mm f/1.4 for $1,500. I still think the sweet spot is the 55mm Sonnar, but this new f/1.4 looks great as well.
On the flip side, I’m sure the new 50mm f/1.4 will cause some confusion on what is and what is not considered a professional level Sony lens. This 50mm would fit in nicely with the rest of the recently announced GM lenses. A few people have noted Zeiss branded lenses focus on “sharpness and contrast” while GM branded lenses focus on “sharpness and bokeh”, putting this new 50mm lens into the former group.
Like others, I’m pretty sure the Zeiss lineup and the GM lineup is just a bunch of marketing jargon. And also like others, I’m a bit confused when looking at Sony’s current and ever-expanding lens lineup. It’s awesome to be bombarded with new lenses to choose from, but newcomers are sure to get lost in branding and terminology. Is it so hard to follow how Fuji brands their lenses?
Update: You can now pre-order the lens on Amazon.
